EXHIBITION OF MAPS

N.Z. GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY

A map exhibition, the first of its kind and scope to be staged in New Zealand, will be opened in Christchurch in early June. It has been arranged by the Canterbury branch committee of the New Zealand Geographical Society. A member of the committee, Mr J. A. Johnston, said that the exhibition, besides being novel, will have great educational value, and will be of particular interest from the historical angle. The exhibition, which will be staged in the Durham street art gallery, will consist of several sections. In the historical section, which is under the direction of Dr. P. B. Maling, an authority in this field, there will be several maps which have never before been shown to the public. The Canterbury Progress League’s display will concentrate on its projects, both past and present, and it is hoped that several large-scale models of these will be staged.

Maps illustrating the growth of Christchurch, its increasing industrialisation, and the possibilities of expansion, will be displayed by the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority, under the direction of Miss Nancy Northcroft.

The largest display will be arranged by the Lands and Survey Department. It will feature an exhibit which will illustrate how a map is born. Every stage, from the aerial photographs to the finished topographic product, will be shown. Maps and map-making equipment will also be displayed. The final section of the exhibition will be arranged by Canterbury University College. Models produced by the United States Geological Survey will be of particular interest in its display. On at least three of the four nights of the exhibition addresses will be delivered by prominent speakers.
