TARIFF CONTROLS RELAXED

ENCOURAGING BETTER HOTEL FACILITIES

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. March 8. Thirty-six hotels have been freed from price control under the policy of encouraging the provision of tourist accommodation and better facilities and services,, said the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr E. H. Halstead) this evening. Most of the hotels concerned — 31 licenced and five unlicenced—were in or near the popular tourist resorts, said the Minister. A number of hotels in the main centres had, however, also qualified for exemption. Five of these were in Wellington, three in Christchurch, and two in Auckland, and one in Dunedin. Mr Halstead said the removal of building controls and the achievement of a satisfactory formula ,for freeing hotel accommodation from price control should assist the hotel industry with its plans for improving its service to the New Zealand and overseas public.
