Variety Club Helps Boy
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, March 7.
Variety artists in Britain and America have combined in an effort to save the life of a 2-year-old London boy, David Lewis, whom they have never seen. David suffers*from a rare type of cancer which London specialists have pronounced incurable. They told the parents that David would inevitably die soon. Members of the Variety Club of Britain, however, heard that a new method of chemical therapy was being practised by Dr. Emanuel Revici at the Institute of Applied Biology, New York, and that there might possibly be a chance that David's life could be prolonged or saved if he were able to take advantage of it. They called an emergency meeting and in 30sec agreed to make £BOO available from their funds to pay air fares for David and his 25-year-old mother, Mrs Betty Lewis. It was then pointed out that the child was so ill that he might die on the journey, and a doctor must travel with him. The local panel doctor where the Lewises live agreed to drop everything and go, too, provided he received no publicity. When the Variety Club heard of this, they offered to pay the doctor’s fare as well. At New York all the needs of Mrs Lewis and David will be taken care of by the Variety Club there.
