TABLE TENNIS

2267 PLAYERS IN CANTERBURY

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. March 8.

If negotiations between New Zealand and Japan for a tour of the Dominion by two Japanese players—including a world champion—break down. New Zealand will accept an offer by Hong Kong players to tour here, states the annual report of the Table Tennis Association. The report states that there are now 14.397 registered table tennis players in New Zealand, but because many associations have not furnished figures the actual number is well in Excess of that shown. Canterbury, with 2267 players, is still the district where the game is most popular. Wellington has 2650 players, of which 850 are Hutt Valley players. Auckland’s large population is represented by only 880 players, but what the district lacks in quantity it more than makes up in quality, providing the outstanding players in the Dominion in both the men's and women's divisions.
