ATHLETICS Canterbury Competitors Do Well At Napier

(From Our Own Reporter)

In a stirring 20-ki! Olympic champion, N.’ R. his first win in 18 races ov in a finish in which only them when the New Zeal; pionships opened at McLi It was a grand battle all tl

Both walkers were extremely tired as McNabb led Read into the park by a few yards. The lead had alternated several times. Reau wrested the lead back with 220 yards to go, but McNab drew level coming up the straight and lengthening his stride appeared to reach the tape for a dead head finish. Read’s time of Ihr 35min 54.65ec is the best ever done in New Zealand, but as records are not recognisable for road events, it can only be listed as a “best New Zealand performance.” The only new national record which will gain recognition was made in the final track event, the 4 x 100 yards relay, in which the Auckland team (G. Davey, B. C. Robinson, L. R. Mills, and M. Rae) did 42sec, .ssec better than the time made by Otago in 1955.

With a remarkably fine thrpw of 156 ft lOin, in the discus, L. R. Mills (Auckland) broke his own resident record of 155 ft 4£in. The quality of his performance is clearly shown by the fact that it is,under 3ft short of the national figures made by P. O’Brien (U.S.A.), in 1955. Rae’s Fine Sprint

Recording 9.4 sec for the first heat of the 100 yards, M. Rae ran the fastest time by a New Zealander and the second fastest ever done in New Zealand. Only the American Olympic champion, R. Morrow, has done better with 9.3 sec, also on McLean Park in December, 1955. Like Morrow’s time, Rae’s was not acceptable as a record, as he had a slight following wind. The standard of competition in the pole vault was the highest yet seen at a national meeting. For the first time, three competitors cleared 12ft, and M. D. Richards (Otago), who retained his title with 12ft 3in, did not attempt to

improve on his winning height. Giving an excellent display of relaxed running, B. Magee (Auckland) won the six miles title by almost a furlong from K. Williams (Otago). D. McD. Clark (Otago) retained the hammer throw with 169 ft 9jin, an improvement of nearly sft on last year. After leading in the long jump with 22ft lOin, the Canterbury junior, D. B. Masters, was relegated to third place in the final round. A Bell (Waikato) did the winning distance of 23ft 2J in on the final jump. Another junior, D. Morris (Auckland) also came from behind for second with 22ft UJin. Canterbury Athletes Except for a comparative failure in the 100 yards heats, Canterbury athletes have performed creditably, and will have a good representation in the semi-finals and finals tomorrow. A bad stumble at the start of the first heat of the 100 yards put L. Jones right to the rear of the field.

Canterbury athletes who will go through to* finals or semi-finals tomorrow are: T. Crossen and B. Kerr (440 yards), M. Wood (440 yards hurdles), P. Cates (220 and 440 yards hurdles), B. Beauchamp (880 yards), C. McGuire (mile). D. Davidson and L. Jones (220 yards). A clash of events caused some others to scratch from events for which they had been entered. There was some criticism of the organisation of the meeting, which finished after 6.30 p.m.—more than one hour and a half late. There were too few officials. The discus and long jump were held up waiting for officials to complete other events.

The women’s pentathlon high jump was. delayed from 3.15 p.m. almost to the end of the meeting because of a clash with the pole vault.

The starting was not of the best standard, and two blatant breaks were allowed to go unchecked. A disappointment for track competitors was that no second and third place times were taken. Although official points results were still not available at the end of the afternoon. Miss V. Sloper is leading in the women’s pentathlon, with, wins in the shot put and high jump and a fifth best time in the 200 metres. An all-time record of 234 entries from 162 athletes were received for the meeting at which Norman Read
