Percy Wyndham Lewis Dead

(Rec. 11.30 p.m.) LONDON, March 8 The British portrait painter and author, Mr Percy Wyndham Lewis, who had been blind for the last five years, died in London last night, aged 72. He had been seriously ill in hospital for a fortnight. The Royal Academy’s rejection of his portrait of T. S. Eliot caused a storm in the art world in 1938. He said that the rejection showed that the academy was prejudiced against modern painting.

Falkland Stamps.— The Argentine Government has sent a’ Note to the British Government protesting against the issue of stamps in the British-held Falkland Islands. Argentina claims that the Falklands referred to as the Malvinas, are Argentine territory.— London. March 8.
