USE OF SUEZ CANAL

“All Ships Which Pay Egypt”

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

(Rec. 10 p.m.) CAIRO, March 8. A Suez Canal official said last night that all ships which paid tolls to Egypt would be allowed passage through the canal. Foreign diplomatic quarters interpreted this to mean that Egypt had rejected the proposal for a 50-50 payment of tolls to Egvpt and the International Bank.

Egypt earlier had announced that the canal would be opened today to ships of up to 500 tons.

Apart from the payments question, observers saw several hopeful signs that the Egyptians were getting ready to open the canal completely to navigation.

About 200 Egyptian and foreign pilots are reported standing by to resume work on the canal at a moment’s notice, and for a month past the Egyptian Canal Authority has been reorganising its staff in readiness for a reopening.
