CURRENT NOTES

About 50 new members were welcomed by the president (Miss Marjorie Best) at an evening party held recently at Elizabeth House by the St. Margaret’s College Old Girls’ Association. This party is held annually to give the girls who left school at the end of the previous year an opportunity of meeting the committee of the association. A talk on the care of the skin was given by a beauty consultant who also demonstrated the art of applying make-up and explained the correct colours to use. A competition was won by ifaiss Robyn McGill and Miss Rana Kent. The patron of the association (Miss J. P. Crosher) was a specially invited guest. A garden fete was held in the grounds of Bishopscourt on Saturday afternoon by the literature committee of the Mothers’ Union. There was a large attendance and the funds raised will be used to purchase books for the library. The senior pupils of St. Margaret’s College gave a demonstration of folk dancing on the lawn, A band was also in attendance.

Mrs H. J. Quarrell described her recent visit to the Chelsea flower show at the February meeting of the Redcliffs-Sumner Garden Club. Mrs W. H. Brown presided. Competition results were: posy bowl, class A, formal, Mrs J. P. Hudd 1, Mrs G. Eames 2; informal. Mrs W. N. Rothwell 1, Mrs L. Hindle 2, Mrs W. L. Knutson 3; class B, formal. Mrs S. W. Nicholson 1, Mrs F. Best 2. Mrs E. Haste 3: informal. Mrs E. J. Ebert 1, Miss S. Foster 2, Mrs G. Webb 3; best hydrangea, Mrs R. W. Gale 1, Mrs W. L. Knutson 2, Mrs E. Rattray 3; bowl of fruit, Mrs E. Linton 1, Mrs J. W. Hadfield 2, Miss C. Andrews 3.

The monthly meeting of the Linwood Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held recently when the president (Mrs W. Teague) presided. Mrs Lewis was appointed as delegate to the Dominion conference to be held in Nelson next month. Mrs Thomas spoke of her experiences in England as a member of the Band of Hope. Remits for the convention were considered.
