THREE STEP’S FORM
Demonstration At Hawera (New Zealand Press Association) HAWERA, March 3. Three Step, which had failed badly on the first day in the Egmont Cup, ran out a clear winner in the Tonks Stakes, principal event and first leg of the double, on the second day of the Egmont Racing Club’s meeting at Hawera on Saturday. • Running clear on the turn, he defeated the warm favourite. Sea Hornet, which was unable to make any real impression over the last half-furlong. A hostile demonstration greeted Three Step on his return to scale. It was one of the worst and most prolonged demonstrations seen on a Taranaki course for many years. Cries of “put him out’’ and boos and cat-calls met Three Step and his jockey, B. P. Wood, as they trotted to the winner’s stall. Three Step ran the mile and a quarter in 2min 2sec, which was only one-fifth of a second outside the New Zealand record. The Three Step-Domitaire combination paid a double dividend of £lll 6s for £l. The totalisator on-course handled £52,629, compared with £51,263 on the second day last year.
