RACING Stablemates Take Motukarara Double

The stablemates Field Chief and Ma Reine made light of big weights in winning the main races at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club's meeting on Saturday for their Christchurch owner, Mr D. McFarlane.

The eight-year-old Field Chief I won the Peninsula Handicap, 11 furlongs, under 9-8, very comfortably from the favourite Tess.) He was the 5, 4 favourite in a field of nine in this, his first win for the season. His win brought him morel strongly into favour for the Autumn Handicap, in which he will be top weight on the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club's meeting next Saturday. Field Chief was ridden by J. Didham. son of Mr McFarlane’s Wingatui trainer. The stable put both Mr McFarlane’s sprinters, Ma Heine and Lochie, into the field for the Kinloch Handicap, the second leg of the double. J. Didham’s mount was Ma Heine, which carried 9-7 and cut down Lochie with a brilliant and almost effortless challenge inside the furlong. The bracket was solidly supported. and the race followed the trend of the betting, none of the others testing the stablemates at the end. Ma Reine is engaged in the £3OOO Thompson Handicap at Trentham this week, and on Saturday her performance stamped her as one of the outstanding candidates for this tough mile test, a race won for the Didham stable last year by Mighty Dollar. Lochie, a winner the last time he raced at Trentham, will' run in the Railway Handicap there next Saturday. Holders of 2716 5s tickets on the Field Chief Maßeine - Lochie combination received £2l 6s for £1 on the double. The AvengeShahwan bracket was most strongly supported of the others with 967 tickets. Field Chief carried 3659 10s tickets in a pool of £17,501 ss. Tess, the runner-up. was a firm favourite with 11,806$ tickets. The meeting was held in fine weather. The track was hard and fast. The on-course totalisator turnover was £41,781, compared with £39,367 10s last year. The First Leg Field Chief outstayed the favourite Tess for a comfortable wm In the Peninsula Handicap. He was in a trailing position behind Tess and Watch and Wait on the home turn. It was late when he removed Tess’s lead, but he did so with little exertion and could have widened his margin of three-quarters of a length. The pace was slack for the first six furlongs. Watch and Wait was in front, though it was quite obvious that C. T. Wilson would have surrendered that role without any reluctance. Most of the others were pulling, even the phlegmatic Demand. Tess had also been fighting for her head and *E. G. Low allowed her to lengthen stride to join Watch and Wait in the lead going to the five furlongs. King Robin and Field Chief were then trailing, and Demand was alongside them, w’ider out, coming to the straight, where Shoal, Mundus. Goldwyn. and Royal Warrant were packed up just behind. Tess had Watch and Wait’s measure going to the furlong, but she had no answer for Field Chiefs challenge. Shoal made ground from the turn for third a length and a half back. She inched past Watch and Wait in the last few strides. King Robin was a length and a half back fifth. Then there was a gap of two lengths to Demand and Goldwyn, and a long gap to Mundus and Royal Warrant. Stablemates To Fore The stablemates Ma Reine and Lochie were too good for the others in the Kinloch Handicap, the second leg of the double. Lochie reached the front from a handy position near the furlong but was practically outclassed by Ma Reine, which gave him 171 b and a galloping lesson near the end, although there was only a neck between them. Ma Reine was slow away, and third to last for a few strides. She retrieved her ground steadily from the five furlongs, dashed up to Lochie inside the furlong, and had the race in hand over the last 50 yards. Lochie was fifth when the field settled down, followed by Avenge, Melinda Jane, and Fulgent from the half mile to the home turn, and ran past Avenge and Fulgent into the lead going to the furlong. Fulgent nosed Avenge out of third place, but was two lengths back. Both had their chances, though Avenge's race was a good one for a horse that had not raced for more than a year. Desert Cloud improved a few places for fifth. Then there were necks to Motueka and Curtain Raiser, the latter drifting early in the race. Writer, which could not stand the early pace, ran the last two furlongs strongly and did not get much room on the inner. He was eighth, beating Leprechaun, Melinda Jane, Smuggles, Merrimayes, Tiles, and Shahwan.

Popular win Tarantella, trained at Riccarton by the veteran, Free Holmes, rounded off a serviceable record on the course by winning the Otahuna High-weight Handicap. It was a popular win although she was fifth favourite. R. W. Gould rode the seven-year-old Record Voyage mare close to the lead. She was fourth on the home turn, and ran past Rhythmonic into the lead going to the furlong. The Wingatui-traned Every Night challenged solidly, but Tarantella held him securely by half a length. Every Night was towards the rear when the field settled down, but -went forward when the field bunched up from the half-mile, and shewed up fairly wide out on the home turn. Every Night, a Trentham candidate, kept up his run ard beat Rhythmonic by a head for second. Rhythmonic galloped keenly close to the lead until they ran to the six furlongs, where he was one of the leaders. He was clear at the five furlongs, but Tarantella had his measure starting the last furlong. Willie Wolseley, Rhythmonic's bracketed mate, could not help place supporters of the bracket. He

was fourth, but three lengths back, and his finish was weak. King’s Song was the best of the others, a length and a half behind Willie Wolseley.
