TROTTING Coronet Lass For Hutt Park Today
Coronet Lass, which will be bracketed with her stablemate, Gregory Grattan, should improve on. her consistent record this season when she contests the Members’ and Manawatu Trot Handicaps at the Wellington Trotting Club’s summer meeting, which will conclude at Hutt Park today. Never further back than fourth in her last seven starts. Coronet Lass, after being narrowly beaten by Armenian in the Gracefield Handicap last Saturday, gave a faultless display in the Utility Handicap later in the day. Gregory Grattan, which is a newcomer to the meeting, has not an encouraging form background, but will have to be considered on the strength of his win at Reefton on December 29. Legislate, which was fourth in the Gracefield Handicap and runner-up to Coronet Lass in the Utility Handicap, and Medetta, which was a fair third in the latter event, should run prominently again today, and may provide Coronet Lass with her strongest opposition.
Worthy Boy, Buller’s Pride and Armenian were others to race creditably on the first day, and may prove capable of getting into the finishes. Composite has been scratched for both the Members’ and Manawatu Handicaps, and Bugle Call will also be missing from the latter.
Maiden pacers are catered for in the Wairarapa and Pressmen’s Handicaps, in which Chappelet, which finished fourth and second in her respective attempts in the corresponding events on the first day, will be solidly supported. Commander Spangle. Ingle Brigade. Zetland and Light Call are all at the improving stage and appeal most of the remainder. Sextant was scratched for the Pressmen's Handicap yesterday. Chance for Bonny Venture
Bonny Venture, which is also engaged in the two-mile Navy Handicap earlier in the day, is selected to do best of the sprinters in the Carterton Handicap. The U. Scott mare was forced over a lot of extra ground, after beginning slowly and receiving a check at the start, in the Army Handicap last Saturday, and did well to finish fourth. Bonny Venture was a decisive winner at her previous start in the Improvers’ Handicap at New Brighton a fortnight ago.
Omega, Skydale. Shantung and Wainoni Loyal appeal most of the others on the limit, and Dismiss and Johnny Hall, which will start from the 12 and 24-yard marks respectively, wlil also have a strong following. Omega, a good winner over two miles last Saturday, should again be hard to beat over the same distance in the Navy Handicap. Dismiss and Wainoni Loyal have been racing consistently, and may provide the Dillon Hall gelding with most opposition. Lady Shona, one of the early favourites, was scratched yesterday for the first leg of the double, the Hutt Park Handicap, in which Worthy Chief, Loyal Nurse and Scottish Brigade are expected to dispute the finish. Shantung, Keff and Solemnity are a favoured trio in the City Handicap, the second leg of the double, in which the only scratching is Medalius. The weather in Wellington during the week has been fine, and the track will be firm and fast.
