FORESTER’S APPEAL

Glossary Of River Control Terms

An appeal for a glossary of the technical .terms used in river control works was made at a meeting of the North Canterbury Catchment Board yesterday by Mr A. P. Thomson (New Zealand Forest Service). Looking through the reports before the meeting, said Mr Thomson, he saw that reference was made to "boxes, aprons, mattresses, spar groynes, pile groynes, lateral protection, boulder crates, drop structures, piled reflector groynes and something called parallel pile protection fences.” Npt being an engineer he was not' always sure of the exact meanings of the.various terms, or whether different terms were not being used for the same thing, said Mr Thomson. Apart from its own usefulness, the compilation of a glossary would be a rewarding task for the engineers themselves. "There is no better discipline for making you think clearly about the terms you are using,” he said. The chief engineer (Mtz H. M. Reid), assured Mr Thomson that a glossary was already being compiled, but* added that it was "quite a big job.”
