POISONING OF CHILD
CORONER’S WARNING OF DANGERS (New Zealand Press Association) WAIMATE, March 1. Negligence by some person or persons was responsible for the death of Andre Cornelius Bootsma, a boy aged three years, according to the Waimate District Coroner, Mr d’A. S. Grut. The verdict at the inquest into the death of the child was that death was attributable to ingestion of arsenic innocently swallowed by the’ deceased. “The increasing distribution of poisons in the form of weedkilling sprays and the like would appear to be particularly dangerous if the utmost care is not taken,” said the Coroner. “The evidence shows that some person’s or persons’ negligence was responsible for this infant’s death.”
Mr Grut said that persons whose occupations made the use of poisons necessary should be mindful of the possibility of these substances getting into wrong or innocent hands. The Coroner commended Sergeant E. W. F. Simpson for the exhaustive inquiries he had made in the case.
