Enrolments At University Total 2073 In Three Days
Canterbury University College has enrolled 2073 students in the last three days and, although form-filling has been greater than usual, the registry now has all the cards it requires for most of the students —and their fees are paid. Previously fees were settlea a little later, and the staff had weeks of work in transcribing details for all record purposes. The registrar (Mr G. G. Turbott) said last evening that he could not say whether last year’s total roll of about 2375 would be exceeded; but it seemed possible. When enrolments opened for law, commerce, and fine arts on Wednesday, 407 were received. On Thursday, when other faculties received enrolments, there were 843, and another 823 were entered in the college books yesterday. To this total of 2073 will be added young men now undergoing military training and, with late entries, the final figure could be close to that for last year. Lectures will begin on Monday, and in the evening there will be a welcome for freshers by the rector (Dr. T *. J. Llewellyn). The new medical officer of the college (Dr. J. D. Lough) will be introduced. Mr Murray Pickering, president-elect of the Stu-
dents’ Association, will speak for the student body. Next Wednesday evening a panel will answer students’ questions. ’The chairman will be Professor R. T. Sussex, head of the modern languages department, and other members will be Mr A. J. Danks, associate professor of economics; Mr J. Vaughan, senior lecturer in chemistry; the Very Rev. Martin Sullivan, a member of the college council; and Miss Sally Page, women students’ vicepresident. New students will be invited into the homes of staff members next Saturday evening. The annual freshers’ ball will be held on March 14.
