TROTTING Gold Hanover In Form For Orari

Gold Hanover, the winner of the Canterbury Park Stakes at her last start a fortnight ago, is expected to continue on the winning path in the Invitation Stakes, the feature event for two-year-olds at the Geraldine Trotting Club’s summer meeting today. Her Addington performance stamped Gold Hanover as a filly with more than average ability. She was one of the tail-enders with six furlongs to run. but soon after started a long run which carried her up to and past the pacemaker, Rosalinda. Bot£ will meet again today. There was considerable merit in Rosalinda’s Addington effort. She set a strong pace to the home turn, and although she wilted inside the last furlong, beat the rest of the field by more than the margin by which she was beaten. Her performance at the trials at Ashburton on Tuesday, when she faded to eighth, after galloping for almost two furlongs and then leading to the straight, was not particularly encouraging, but with a reasonable beginning today Rosalinda is expected to be Gold Hanover’s strongest opponent. Space Patrol, a colt by Johnny Globe from Golden Lady, was runner-up to Gala Girl in the Golden Slipper Stakes at Waimate in December, and although he did not show as much dash in his recent race at Addington, it w’ill be. surprising if he fails to race prominently. Another strongly - favoured candidate is Seafield Lad from W. R. Butt’s team. Seafield Lad was finishing on for third, after appearing to be squeezed for racing room on the fence, in the Canterbury Park Juvenile Stakes. With better luck in the running today, Seafield Lad could take a prominent part. Guid Nicht and Te Par, which raced prominently at the Ashburton trials, and Sebabu, a bay colt by Smoky Hanover from High Flight, may fare best of the unraced candidates. Chance For Alight Alight, runner-up to Silent Jim in her first start at Ashburton on Boxing Day, may improve on that placing in the Introductory Handicap, the slower-class trotters’ race. In her only other start at Washdyke last month Alight lost her chance by breaking at the start.

Estelle and Kauranui, which both performed creditably at the Ashburton trials, may do best of the others.

Reflective. Sure Maggie and Sheffield’s Beauty are expected to dispute the finish of the Stewards’ Trot Handicap, in which Medetta, which is to race at Hutt Park, was scratched yesterday. Procrastinator, which trotted solidly throughout to win his race at the trials at Ashburton, and Great Caution, a good third at New Brighton last Saturday, should also do well. Maiden pacers will get their opportunities in the Waihi Handicaps No. 1 and No. 2. Question. Lady Attack and Zetland are favoured in 1 the former event, and Wimpy. Auditor and Buren are expected to do best in the second. Toucher May Atone Toucher, whose form before New Brighton could not be faulted, may atone for his failure in the Marine Handicap there in the President’s Handicap today. Suzendy and the consistent Night Wind are expected to be Toucher’s most testing opponents. Debate was scratched yesterday for the Introductory Trot Handicap, and Auriferous, an acceptor in the Geraldine Cup and the President’s Handicap, will not start in either event. ’ The Geraldine Cup. which is the first leg of the double, should be an interesting contest, with Macklin, Overdrive and Starwise selected to dispute the finish. Catamaran has been the only scratching in the second leg. the Improvers’ Handicap. This still leaves a big field, with 18 of the 19 starters on the limit. With reasonable luck in the running Captain Free. Scrooge? and Gold Cloud are expected to figure most prominently. There was some drizzle in South Canterbury yesterday, but not enough to have much effect on the track, and provided there is not further deterioration in the weather, the going will be hard and fast.
