FIRST LEG AT TE AROHA

Popular Choice Black Raven

“The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, February 22. The Takanini iour-year-old gelding, Black Raven, is a popular choice for the Herries Memorial Cup at the Te Aroha Jocxey Club’s autumn meeting tomorrow. He will be bracketed on the totalisator with his stablemate, Arawa. Both horses are raced by Sir Ernest Davis. Black Raven has 7-9, which is slightly below the middle of the handicap, and 7|lb more than when he won the Summer Cup at Ellerslie on December 28. The Summer Cup was a mile and a quarter, and the Herries Memorial Cup is a furlong longer.

The Te Aroha track is big, with a long straight run to the finish, and a horse of good stamina is required Command Performer stays solidly, so he may be hard for Black Raven to beat, and it is probable that Great Scot will also be prominent. He is a five-year-old which looks close to his best form.

A field close to the safety number of 27 is likely for the second leg, the Shaftesbury Hack Handicap, of one mile. Red Eagle, a three-year-old gelding at the top of the weights with 9-10, and the improving four-year-old mare, Whitiora, are expected to dispute the finish. Windermere, Robert Kay, and Summer Glow areother candidates which will have to be considered. The long spell of fine weather has hardened the going, which would be better for two or three heavy showers.
