PEOPLE IN THE PLAY

The, New Zealand left-hand batsman, L. S. M. Miller, has been almost as successful this season with his club, Karori, as he was for his province, Wellington, in the Plunket Shield matches. In the club matches so far. Miller has scored 420 runs at an average of 60. and his likely inclusion in the three test teams may mean he will take no further part in the club championship. ☆ The former international New Zealand Rugby League player, Rex Percy, has been denied a clearance by the New Zealand Rugby League. Percy toured England and France with the 1955-56 New Zealand League team, and he was anxious to play League in Australia.

The former Canterbury offspin bowler, W. Bridgman, enjoyed a remarkable spell of success for Kaikorai against Carisbrook in Dunedin last Saturday. He took the last five Carisbrook wickets for five runs. His full figures were 6.3 overs. 3 maidens, 5 runs, 5 Wickets. ¥ Canterbury’s fourth-ranked woman tennis player. Miss P. Allen left Christchurch early this morning on a 10-months visit to England and probably the continent. She hopes to play in English tour naments and experience there should improve her already capable game. Miss Allen was South Island champion in 1955. In England she will take up a teaching appointment in June.

A former All Black half-back, Neville Black, is playing with success as full-back for the Keighley Rugby League Club in England. AA The former Canterbury and New Zealand light-weight boxing champion. Norman Fisher, is now living at Little River. He has been a familiar figure at boxing contests and championships in Christchurch for many years. Fisher was a champion in three different weights, and in 1935, as a lightweight, won the Jam/eson Belt for the most scientific boxer at the national championships. He represented New Zealand at the Olympic Games at Berlin in 1936. ☆ One of New Zealand Rugby’s fastest wing three-quarters in recent years. Peter Henderson, is having his last season of Rugby League with the Huddersfield club in England. He expects to return to New Zealand later in the year. ☆ The Canterbury number eight or flank forward. H. C. Burry, will play for the New Brighton Rugby team this year. Burry formerly played for University. Canterbury Rugby enthusiasts will wish Kevin Stuart well in the appointment with a grain and seed firm which will take him next month to Waipukurau. It was cruel misfortune that injury in the match against the Springboks ended Stuart’s representative career when he was only six games short of 100. but at least there was satisfaction that Stuart should in his last match, display all the virtues which made his name, instead of continuing until his form fell away. ☆ One of the senior Rugby teams hardest hit by retirements this year will be Old Boys. P. B. Vincent is in California, and at least five other leading players will not play in senior Rugby. They are K. R. Blick, a Canterbury wing three-quarters, G. Knight, a Canterbury B hooker, G. Pilkington, a very useful utility back, M. B. Poore, an accomplished fullback. and W. Purdon, a very capable forward.
