Surf Race

The surf race is always likely to provide a surprise winner, as in a heavy surf a competitor who picks up a “shoot" can often come right through the field to finish well up. However, this may not happen so easily at Lyall Bay. where a moderate sea is more likely.

Sumner created a record last year in providing all first three placings in the surf ski event, with F. Hilton, R. McNickel (wellknown senior Rugby player), and T. Pasley finishing in that order. This club may again provide the winner, although opposition can be expected from • some of the North Island clubs, particularly Waihi and Paekakariki. Competition among the juniors is always keen, and prospects are difficult to assess, but the New Zealand title-holder, B. Robertson (New Brighton) will again be one of the favourites in the surf and belt events. He should have strong opposition from a promising surfer, C. Bidwell (Sumner), and from C. Cousins (St. Clair).
