CONFERENCE OF B.M.A.
200 DOCTORS TO ATTEND (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 8. Nearly 200 doctors from many parts of New Zealand, Australia and Malaya will attend the biennial conference of the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association, which will open in Wellington on February 19.
Discussions at the conference will, more than ever before, relate to problems of general rather than specialist practice. The presi-dent-elect (Dr. P. P. Lynch, of Wellington), will set the tone in his address on the first evening by speaking of the changed situation of the medical practitioner, brought about by social and scientific developments in recent years.
A general meeting of all sections on the opening day will discuss a topic of interest to doctors and laymen alike—“ Problems Associated with the use of Antibiotics.”
On the second day. all sections will hold a joint discussion on poliomyelitis, and on the third day there will be a similar general discussion on tranquillising and stimulant drugs. The Memorial Oration will be given this year by the Dean of the Otago Medical School (Sir Charles Hercus). He will speak on “The Doctor in Peace and War.” Among the visitors from Australia will be Dr. E. F. Thomson, president of the New South Wales branch of the 8.M.A., and a member of the association's Federal council, and Dr. A. R. Southwood. Director-General of Public Health in South Australia.
