HARVESTING IN NELSON

SEASONAL WORK OFFERING

Labour so far offered for fruit, hop, and tobacco picking in. Nelson has not been sufficient, although production has been adversely affected by the weather. A spokesman of the Labour Department said in Christchurch yesterday that there was work for many more men and women in Nelson. The interest shown in these seasonal jobs had not been nearly as keen as in previous years, he said.

The demand for work was growing heavier, the spokesman said, and he believed that when the season began in about a month all vacancies would be filled.

The Nelson apple yield is down this season, the standard of tobacco crops is believed to be poorer than usual, and hops are not up to normal standards.
