CHAMPION’S INTRODUCTION TO CHRISTCHURCH CYCLING
The Hungarian long distance cycling champion, Mr Denes Cserapanyi, had an unhappy introduction to cycling in New Zealand on his first ride in Christchurch last evening. Mr Cserepanyi, riding a borrowed bicycle alongside his wife in Gloucester street, was travelling to a meeting of Hungarians when he crashed into- the open right-hand front door of a car which had just been parked. As he fell, he catapulted into his wife and she in turn collided with another cyclist.
As a result of the accident, the handlebars of Mr Cserepanyi’s machine were broken and several spokes were ripped from a wheel. The bicycle his wife was riding also had several spokes damaged. Neither suffered injury, nor were the clothes they had bought in Christchurch only that day damaged. This was the first time they had ridden cycles in Christchurch since their arrival with a Hungarian refugee draft on Saturday evening.
