CHRISTCHURCH TEAM’S SUCCESS
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. January 21. The most successful championship contest yet conducted by the West Coast Marching Centre was held on Saturday before a big crowd at Rugby Park, Greymouth. Visiting teams again dominated and the main awards went to Downing’s Red Robins, of’ Christchurch, with Rochdale, of Christchurch, also doing well. Greymouth's top team was Vauxhall, while Valettiers (Westport) and Legionnaires (Westport) also did well. Results:— Senior Truman’s Shield, for championship aggregate: Downing’s Red Robins (Christchurch) 1; runners-up (L.V.A. Cup), Lordships (Christchurch). Stone Rose Bowl and trophy for championship leader; Miss Jill Henderson (Downing’s Red Robins). Sutherland’s Rose Bowl for champion Coast leader: Miss P. Stuart (Valettiers, Westport). Harris Cup and medals, for champion Coast teams: Vauxhall (Greymouth); runners-up (Burley Cup), Valettiers (Westport). Centre buttons for costume: Rochdale (Christchurch). Ashby Bergh Cup (display march): Downing's Red Robins. West Coast Motor Bodies Cup (street march): Rochdale. Junior Joan Torrance Cup, for junior champion march: Legionnaires (Westport). West Coast Centre Cup (champion leader): Legionnaires. Yesterday, several of the teams at Greymouth for the championship competed in a marching competition conducted at the gala day sports at Wingham Park. Downing’s Red Robins won the open section, with their leader. Miss Jill Henderson, also winning the leaders’ trophy. Vauxhall (Greymouth) won the West Coast section. Greymouth Taxis the junior, and Bluebirds (Cobden) the midgets.
