FOREST SAVED FROM FIRE
Five-Day Fight By Workers (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 21. Sixty State Forest and timber mill workers have saved the 10 million trees of the Maramarua forest after a five-day fight to halt a fire that swept miles of Mercer swamp land. Today only isolated “hot spots” remained. Yesterday the fire went to within 50 yards of the pines. At one place the flames jumped the road edging the forest and were stopped on the fire-break itself.
