SEAMEN FINED FOR THEFT

Asgeir Gangaas, seaman, and Jakob Jakobsen, bo’sun, both members of the crew of the Norwegian ship Vilja pleaded guilty at the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court yesterday to stealing 11 tins of tomato juice. 15 tins of sardines and two packets of cheese, valued at £2 5s 6d, the property of the Halfden Ditlev-Simonsen Company, Oslo, Norway. The pleaded guilty and Messrs W. T. Lester and W. G.' Salmon, Justices of the Peace, convicted and fined each £2 10s. Senior-Sergeant J. L. Graham said the accused were stopped by Constable D. J. Back in Oxford street on Sunday morning. They were carrying the stolen articles in a bag. They had no authority to remove the food from the ship.
