UNREST IN SPAIN
Arrests Made In Barcelona (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) MADRID, Jan. 19. The police were today reported to have arrested a number of persons alleged to be planning a general strike in Barcelona on Monday.
According to authoritative sources those arrested yesterday were , Communists and others planning also to persuade the people of Barcelona to extend the present boycott of tram-cars to shops. markets. theatres and cinemas.
In Barcelona, where the boycott of trams over fare increases entered its sixth day today, the authorities had the situation well in hand, the sources said. Police fired shots in the air at Seville yesterday to disperse university students demonstrating against a 40 per cent, increase in tram fares.
Freight Rates Increase.— Cargo freight rates from Britain to the east coast of the United States and Canada were to be increased by about 10 per cent., the “Financial Times” said today. The rise was caused by a steady increase in ship operating costs.—London. January 18.
