SWIMMING Further Six Records Set In Title Events

Further evidence of a great improvement jn the standard of all grades of swimming in Canterbury was seen on Saturday when the second night of the Canterbury Swimming Championships was held at the Centennial Pool. On the first night last Wednesday, six new records were established, and on Saturday another six were broken. One record —for the 55 yards junior boys’ freestyle—was broken twice by the young Beckenham competitor. G. Dann. With the third and final night to be held on Wednesday, it is likely that the total number of records established will be raised even further. A 14-year-old junior, Graham Dann, of the Beckenham club, lowered the 55 yards freestyle record twice during the evening with brilliant swims. In the first heat of the event. Dann easily outpaced the opposition to break the old record with a time of 30.7 sec. and in the final he again left the rest of the field to finish in 30.6 sec. Considering this is his first year in competitive swimming, his new record, which is .2sec faster than that established by A. McPhail last year, is a particularly fine effort. An indication of Dann’s extremely powerful swimming is that his record is only 2.Bsec outside the Canterbury senior record for the distance. Fast Breaststroke Swim Another outstanding swimmer was the national 220 yards intermediate breaststroke title holder. G. Brittenden, Spreydon. who won the Canterbury title over this distance in 2min 58.8 sec. His time is only I.Bsec outside the New Zealand intermediate record established in 1949 by T. Eagle (Auckland). It was the first time the event had been included in the Canterbury championship programme, so Brittenden cannot claim a record. If, however, his time is not exceeded at the next two championship meetings held in Canterbury. his time will automatically become a record. Garratt Retains Title P. R. Garratt retained his senior 440 yards freestyle title and reduced his Canterbury record for this event by 2sec. Although Garratt had an easy win. R. Blair, of Spreydon. swam well to take second place ahead of A. Lee (Spreydon). Miss Pamela Breward won the women's 220 yards breaststroke title handsomely, and reduced a 22-year-old record of Miss R. Low for this event by the amazing margin of 14 seconds. Miss Breward was never worried by the other competitors, although Miss W. Pearce (Syreydon) and Miss M. Hunter (Christchurch), who were second and third respectively. also broke the old record. The other two records went to Miss F. Bullivant in the intermediate 110 yards backstroke, and Miss J. McPhail in the junior 110 yards freestyle.
