CYCLING HOPE GIBBONS CUP

LUCAS WINS FROM ANSTICE

Excellent riding was seen at English Park on Saturday evening when the Hope Gibbons and Fitzgerald Cups were competed for. In the final of the Hope Gibbons Cup all the riders, except A. Stamper, who was making a solo effort out in front, bunched together after six laps. Stamper’s great lead kept the other riders moving at a very solid pace and with three laps to go Stamper was overtaken. Down the back straight P. Doyle went round the field closely followed by Newlands, but 220 yards from the finish Lucas, with devastating speed, went right round the field to take the front and hold on to win by a length from D. Anstice and D. SWanston, who beat Newlands in the last 30 yards. The five-mile scratch race for the Fitzgerald Cup was an excellently run race with a very fast pace being maintained throughout and the field tightly bunched. A lap before the bell J. Faulkner took off with M. Hertnon oh his wheel and with Giles and Armstrong also moving up fast. Just after the bell Faulkner was still in the lead, but going down the back straight he was passed and in the final sprint Giles came on to win from the fast-moving Armstrong. Anstice was third.
