Market Quieter But

Still Firm

Business recorded yesterday by the Christchurch Stock Exchange fell away from the previous day’s high level but was well spread through the quotation list.

Gains again outnumbered falls, though a higher proportion of prices than earlier in the week were unchanged. In their first local business of 1957 A.N.Z. Bank, Ampol and B.H.P. made gains comparable with those shown earlier by other Australian issues. Coles improved slightly and Woolworths sold fractionally lower.

Skcllerup preference and Ballins Breweries each had their first local sales for the year, the preference issue being slightly firmer and the brewery shares selling’3d lower than before Christmas. N.Z. Refrigerating, Whitcombe and Tombs, new, and Woolworths, N.Z., also reappeared on the sales list, all at unaltered prices.
