RACING Yeman In Favour For Cup Today

(From Our Own Reporter) T , All Li ir' ELLINGTON, January 18. Tne Auckland Cup winner, Yeman, has" tinned in favour for lie \\ ellmgton Cup tomorrow with the withdrawal of Somerset Fair. The Auckland Wellington Cups double has eluded nianv good stayers, hut Fenian has not reached a place in the weights where he wdl be in trouble at the end of ■> hard-run race.

Somerset Fair's ability to master two miles must remain in doubt. He disappointed his Ellerslie trainer. K. J. Heaton, in his trial on Thursday and will not run in the cup. Somerset Fair, a brilliant performer under weight-for-age conditions, was the problem horse in the Wellington Cup field. He was handicapped as a nonstayer. and trainers of most of the other leading stayers regarded him as the main danger at the weights. K. D. Campbell will now ride the Waikato Gold Cup winner Fettle. Yeman's trainer. C. Jillings. is hoping for a soundly-run race to give the Sabaean four-year-old every chance to make his considerable stamina fully effective. Column should be a strong representative for the South Island. The long Trentham straights will suit this dogged Orari stayer, a tough battler in the hardest finishes. The Dunedin Cup winner. Relinquish. a Riccarton representative. showed possibilities as a light-weight cup prospect in his trial on Thursday. Stamina was written heavily into his fast run over one mile and a half at Wingatui. Conditions will almost certainly suit Cardigan, which will be ridden by N. Sellwood. Cardigan is not a good galloper in training, and his trial on Thursday satisfied E. Ropiha. the Woodville trainer for Sir Willoughby Norrie's stayer. Chance For Royal Zorra Summersette is the ruling favourite for the Telegraph Handicap, second leg of the double, but she will have difficulty in justifying that position •gainst Royal Zorra. Royal Zorra was not ridden to advantage in some of her races earlier this season, but had a well-earned change of luck in the Members’ Handicap at the New’ Zealand Cup meeting. South Island sprinters have a good record at Trentham and Lochie and Copenhagen should be a match for the best North Island gallopers in the field. An exceptionally fast half-mile by the stablemates. Yahabeebe and Ganymede, at Trentham on Thursday has heightened interest in the Wellington Stakes. Yahabeebe may be Ganymede’s conqueror over six furlongs, but the two-year-old will put the others strongly to the test under her weight. On a firm track, a Trentham rix-furlong record may be established in the Wellington Stakes.

Brackets: Regal Effort and Major Effort, Beejay and Emulation. Scratched: Mary Gilpin.

CAMP HACK HANDICAP, Of £9OO. One mile.

Rise and Shine is almost certain to run in the Anniversary Handicap, for w’hich she is an early favourite. Plans will be changed only if there is rain, which is not expected.

The promising Riccarton hack Teaka was scratched today for the Camp Handicap. He is being reserved for the Douro Handicap on -Monday. Selections: — 1130 a.m—Te Marua High-weight: Royal Inca.
