PEOPLE IN THE PLAY
The North Sydney Rugby League team, captained by the former Australian Rugby captain, Trevor Allan, is expected to win the Sydney Rugby League championship next season. Allan played brilliantly last season after being out for two years with a leg injury suffered in England. Allan has trained throughout the summer and is already in top condition. Included in his side are test players P. Diversi, K. McCaffery, and R. Sullivan.
In the Auckland City and Suburban Cricket Association’s senior grade competition last Saturday, C. A. Kerr took 14 wickets for 30 runs. Playing for Green Lane, Kerr in the first innings took seven Howick wickets for 4 runs, and in the second innings, seven for 26. In its first inings, Howick scored only 10 runs, the lowest ever recorded in senior cricket at the Domain in Auckland. ☆ The Australian Olympic sprinter, Ted McGlynn, warns to retire from athletics, but not with any doubt remaining that he has infringed his amateur status. He said he had been upset by recent statements that he had endangered his amateur status by accepting money given by the residents of his home town, Parkes, for out-of-pocket expenses.
The Wimbledon and United States champion, Shirley Fry, plans to live in Australia for
the next two years. She will be married in Sydney next month. Miss Fry said that she would not compete in any more international tournaments and would play only in state and Australian championships. She would have a long rest from tennis after her current Australian tour. Miss Fry and Miss Althea Gibson have been appearing in all the leading Australian tournaments.
