LAWN TENNIS JUNIOR SHIELD MATCHES

Canterbury Boys In Final

Some major upsets to the seedings in the New Zealand junior tennis championships are likely early in the tournament if performances in the semi-finals of the Slazenger and Howe Shield junior interprovincial competitions at Wilding Park yesterday can be taken as a guide.

Both the top seed for the under 19 boys’ singles, B. Goggin, of Wellington, and the top seed for the under 19 girls’ singles, the present title-holder, Miss J. Davidson, of Canterbury, were twice beaten. Miss Davidson went down to the leading Wellington players, Misses F. Cliff and J. Kent, and Goggin was beaten by A. D. Huston and G. Judge, of Canterbury. Yesterday’s shield semi-finals were dominated by the Auckland teams in both Slazenger and Howe competitions. Today, Auckland will play Canterbury in the final of the boys’ contest, and in the Howe Shield final Auckland will play Wellington. The Auckland teams won both their contests without the loss of a match in singles or doubles. In the Slazenger Shield, Auckland beat Hutt Valley by 10 matches to 0; and Canterbury beat Wellington by 9 matches to 1. Auckland beat Hawke’s Bay by 10 matches to 1, and Wellington beat Canterbury by 7 matches to 2, in the Howe Shield.

One doubles match in the Can-terbury-Wellington Howe Shield match was not played because it was too late in the evening. Play was two hours late in beginning because overnight rain had made the courts slippery. Canterbury Wins

The Canterbury boys’ team played excellently to lose only one singles match. Huston, who reached the final of the Wellington junior singles championship this week but could not play it because of a leg injury, was in grand form to beat the top Wellington player, R. Greenwood, 6-4, 6-1, and the second player, Goggin, whom he also beat at Wellington, 6-3, 6-3, with ease. His strong, kicking service, clever net play and placements were decisive against Greenwood.

Judge was extended in the first set to beat Greenwood, 8-6, 6-2, but against Goggin he was not extended to win, with the loss of only three games, 6-1, 6-2. His fine driving on both sides was too good for a player who made many mistakes.

B. Aldridge (Canterbury third) was one of the most impressive when he beat his opposite in the Wellington side, M. Simons, 6-1, 6-1, with a forceful style. However, Canterbury will have a most difficult task to beat Auckland, which looks a well-balanced side. The top boy, J. Lockington, did not play to his best when he beat B. Shute (Hutt Valley), 6-8, 6-4, 6-4, and it looked for a time as if Shute would win. Shute for much of the match appeared the steadier, but he made the mistake later of playing too much in the air for one of Lockington’s smashing and volleying ability. The young Hutt Valley second boy. P. Dibley, also gave a fine performance when he took C. Pascoe (Auckland) to three sets. Pascoe won, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, after losing points on a restricted forehand but winning them with spun service and good drop shots. Miss Davidson Lapses

Miss Davidson was nowhere near her best form for her two losses, and she threw points away against both Misses Kent and Cliff, who proved far too steady for her. She had leads at times in both matches, but then seemed to lapse in concentration and determination.

Most successful Canterbury players were the second, Miss G. Hopkinson, and the fourth, Miss L. Mardon. Miss Hopkinson lost only narrowly to Miss Cliff and then in the afternoon made no mistake about beating Miss Kent, 6-1, 6-2. Her driving was outstanding. Miss Mardon gained the only other win for Canterbury when she beat Miss M. Johnston. 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. She was down, 0-5, in the third set with two match points against her, and she survived another two at 3-5 before she went on to win determinedly. The Auckland girls had easy wins in most of their matches against the Hawke’s Bay team. One of the most impressive was Miss M Hatton, who won the Auckland junior title this week. Playing only third, she lost only two games in her matches after powerful serving and strong driving. Results:—
