MAORI CULTURE
Move To Preserve Language
(New Zealana Press Association) DUNEDIN. January 18. Steps which could be taken to ensure the preservation of Maori culture in New Zealand, with special reference to the teaching of Maori in schools, were discussed by the anthropology section of the Science Congress today.
A sub-committee—Dr. R. Duff. Dr. M. Winiata, Dr. W. R. Geddes, and Mr J. M. Ritchie—was appointed to prepare a suitable resolution for submission to the recommendation committee on Tuesday afternoon. The meeting favoured the introduction of a lectureship in the Maori language in at least one teachers’ training college, so that teachers going into Maori primary schools would be able to teach Maori as a subject.
