10 MEN FIGHT WITH POLICE
Three Arrests Made
When a police constable attempted to restore order among about 10 men fighting outside a hotel in Cashel street just after 6 o’clock last evening, several of the men attacked him and three carloads of police had to be called to restore order. Three men were arrested and will appear in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. Two will be charged with assaulting the police, and one with obstructing the police and with disorderly behaviour.
The ten men, some of whom appeared to be under the influence of liquor, were fighting on the footpath and on the street when Constable L. M. Griffiths tried to stop the fracas. Several of the men attacked him and a large crowd was attracted by the disturbance. A passing taxi driver called the police station and a patrol car was quickly on the scene. Two extra carloads of police were sent and a constable who was off duty and driving past in his car also intervened. In the meantime, some persons had come to the aid of the constable who was in danger of injury. Several of the men fighting continued to attack the police as they attempted to quell the disturbance, butting with their heads and kicking violently. At one stage of the affair, the nine policemen had their hands full and a police officer described the incident as “something of a free-for-all.”
