BLOOD BANK STOCKS
REPLENISHMENT BY NEW DONORS Donors from as far away as Auckland and Wellington visited the blood bank at the Christchurch Public Hospital yesterday afternoon to help to replenish the bank’s depleted stocks of blood Between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., 31 persons were tested and 10 new donors, ’seven of them in the O negative group—the rarest type of blood—were found. Accidents in the Christchurch area had been few and the demand for blood for transfusions had not been so heavy as had been expected, the secretary of the bank (Mr T. W. Smith) said. ‘‘We were lucky to get away with it so easily.” The bank was open last Monday, when five donors gave blood. Usually about 30 donors visit the bank every day, but as the bank was closed during most of the holidays, stocks fell. Blood can be kept for only 14 days, after which it must be converted into plasma. ‘‘l would like to thank all these people who have come in from outside districts to give blood to the bank,” said Mr Smith yesterday.
During November. 727 persons visited the blood bank, but there were only 488 donors in December.
