COMMERCIAL SHAREMARKETS OVERSEAS
Strong Finish To Year
The New York and London sharemarkets closed the year on a strong note after making marked recoveries during December. Both markets, however, lacked buoyancy.
In New York, the Dow Jones index of industrial share prices closed the year at 499.47—a net increase of slightly more than 11 points, or 2.3 per cent., from the closing level for 1955. By contrast, tne index rose 84 points, or 20.8 per cent., in 1955.
In London, the Financial Times index of industrial ordinary shares closed on December 31 at 178.8—a decline of nearly 22 points, or 10.8 per cent., for the year. MELBOURNE The investment market of the Melbourne Stock Exchange opened on a firm note yesterday. Leading stocks to rise included Electro. Zinc, which rose by 2s. and A.C.I. which rose Is 3d. Other moves were mainly small, but on the whole, rises in value well exceeded falls. Trading generally was quiet. Mining stocks were firmer. Consol. Zinc rose Is 9d. while in the oil group Santos rose 2s. Uraniums rose also. Commonwealth loans held around steady rates on a moderate turnover.

Butter Drops 10/- In London (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. January 3. The London office of the New Zealand Dairy Products Marketing Commission advises that on January 2 the market for New Zealand finest grade butter opened at 266 s a hundredweight ex store. London; a drop of 10s a hundredweight since Christmas. The choicest Australian butter is currently quoted at 264 s a hundredweight, while Danish butter, which has been selling at about 421 s a hundredweight ex quay since the end of September, has now been heavily reduced, and is quoted at approximately 341 s a hundredweight ex quay, a drop of 80s a hundredweight since Christmas.
The cheese market is also weaker, with finest New Zealand white waxed cheese now being quoted at 253 s a hundredweight. Australian cheese is quoted nominally at 10s a hundredweight less, while home-produced Cheddars and Cheshires remain unchanged at about 255 s and 235 s a hundredweight respectively.
