“Pedigree Unknown.’’ The final register for the 1956 Kennel Club in London is expected to include the names of more than 100.000 pedigree dogs in Britain and a number of dogs marked “PU.” This stands for "pedigree unknown.’’ and is a tactful way of saying that they are mongrels. The club lists them because it is endeavouring to encourage the owners of exceptionally intelligent dogs to join dogs’ training clubs and enter their animals for obedience tests.—London, January
