WORLD AFFAIRS

Sir , —l would like to give two quotations. The first, taken from the New Year message from our Governor-General, reads as follows: "It is impossible to reconcile the conflicting ideologies in the world today—compromise is out of the question.’’ The second, taken from the political report of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China to the eighth national congress of the party. September 15. 1956: "In our foreign relations we consistently follow a fixed policy of peace and advocate peaceful coexistence and friendly co-opera-tion among all nations.” I leave vour readers to judge which of the above quotations holds out the best prospects for the future happiness of the human race.— Yours, etc., January 3, 1957.
