Universities' Swimming
Tomorrow, the 12 members of the New Zealand Universities’* [swimming and water polo team will leave Wellington for a five • weeks’ tour of New South Wales.: i Victoria, and Queensland. The I itinerary for the tour, which was * announced last week by the Aus-: itralian Universities’ Sports Asso-j elation, is a full one. including! two test matches and eight other ' major carnivals. The team will be billeted while j in Australia, and will travel both ways by sea. The money for the. , tour has been raised by students I i in each of the four main centres i Four Canterbury swimmers are included in the side. They are J H. Broomfield. I. H. McDonald. O Snoep and F. J. MacKenzie. Broomfield 1s the captain and manager of the side, and with his outstanding record as the Canter-, bury medley champion should fill) the positions well. McDonald, who was unsuccessful in an attempt to beat his Can- ; .terbury 220 yards breaststroke record on Saturday, is nevertheless! ia strong swimmer with plenty of experience in national events ! McDonald is particularly fit. especially as he was in training during the winter months as a candidate for the New Zealand surf team which toured Australia last month. Otto Snoep is the Canterbury men’s sprint freestyle champion and a fine water polo player. Together with Finlay MacKenzie. an outstanding player at stopper back.! Snoep. McDonald and Broomfield will help to make up a verystrong New Zealand water polo: side. 1 The two test carnivals against' !the Australian Universities’ side . will be held on January 9 and 10. I The team will leave Sydney for {Wellington on February- 7.
