BATSMEN FAIL

Auckland Out For 144

(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON. December 26. Northern Districts established a first-innings lead of 114 runs on the second day of the Plunket Shield cricket match against Auckland at Seddon Park. Hamilton, today. Northern Districts scored 258 in the first innings, and Auckland 144. At the close of play today Northern Districts, in its second innings, had scored 22 without loss. D. L. Perry (33) and D. Taylor (37) were the only Auckland batsmen who seemed likely to make many runs against a good attack, of which the left-hander. A. F. Lissette. and the Bay of Plenty off-spinner, D. Ferrow. formed the spearhead. Perry and Taylor scored their runs at a good rate. Taylor gave two chances. He was always looking for runs, and punished anything loose. Much of the batting was slow. G. O Rabone. for instance, batted 83min for 15, R. Harris 85mm for 10. and J. B. Morris 45min for four. Auckland suffered two misfortunes. The promising young batsman. W. Playle. left the field on Tuesday afternoon because of a pulled muscle, and when he went in to bat at the end of the innings he had the services of a runner. Because of indisposition H. Moyle was not at the ground, and Auckland batted / one man short. When Auckland was in the field the twelfth man, B. J. Postles. and the manager, V. C. Belsham. fielded as substitutes. Lissette. who had a successful season for Auckland in shield games last season, worried most of the batsmen and took four wickets for 35 in 28 overs, including 15 maidens. Ferrow made an impressive debut in shield cricket His four wickets cost 50 runs and were obtained in 27 overs. Scores: — NORTHERN DISTRICTS First innings .. .. 258 Second Innings -J. K.
