Baked Own Bread For 64 Years

An Auckland woman has baked her own bread for 64 years and has never had a failure. She is Mrs J. J. Turner, of Devonport. She is 73. She made her first loaf at the age of nine, when she had to stand on a stool to reach the table. Over the years Mrs Turner has often made the yeast when none was procurable ready for use. Mrs Turner was born in Hucknell, near Nottingham, England She came to New Zealand with her husband 40 years ago. They settled at Mangapai, 12 miles from Whangarei. She found her breadmaking skill invaluable there because there was a bread delivery only once a week. It was not necessary for Mrs Turner to bake her own bread when she went to Auckland 15 years ago, but it never entered her mind to do so. Mrs Turner claims it is cheaper for people to cook their own bread and that it tastes better than baker’s bread.
