Hope for Canal Agreement

(Rec. 11.20 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Dec. 26. Egypt had indicated to the United States that it was ready to negotiate through the United Nations on a permanent Suez Canal agreement, a United Press report said today. Diplomatic sources said today that the Egyptian President. Colonel Nasser, had given the United States hope during at least three rounds of talks at Cairo that he was ready to work for a permanent canal agreement. Diplomats said that Colonel Nasser also had indicated that he might be able to accept some kind of “peace without settlement” in the general Arab-Israel struggle. However, they said that Colonel Nasser had told the United States very definitely this was not the time for an Arab-Israeli settlement.
