BEACH GALAS

Picnic Parties At Sumner Two beach galas, at Sumner and New Brighton, were well attended by Christchurch families yesterday. Many of the visitors took picnic baskets with them to the beaches. At Sumner in the afternoon, more than 1000 cars lined the road from Cave Rock to the clock tower, and at least 4000 men. i women, and children were in the : gala grounds. Stalls and sideshows !of various sizes competed with for the attention of the visitors. A miniature railway round the clock tower attracted good patronage from children. In spite of the hot weather, there were few bathers, because the cold Waimakariri drift down the coast extended for 150 yards or so from the water's edge.
