An almost entire absence of gutters and downpipes on new American, houses surprised a team of British builders, who visited the United States recently. They were told that the rain in many areas was often so heavy that normal gutters would be inadequate in any case and that outer walls were protected by wide eaves. Grading of soil between houses is planned to ensure that heavy falls of water are carried off the plot in a way that deters soil erosion and standing water.
