Destruction Of Statue

(Rec. 9 p.m.) PORT SAID, Dec. 24. Egyptians today toppled a statue of Ferdinand de Lesseps into the canal he designed. An Egyptian youth lighted a charge under the statue watched by a jubilant crowd of 5000, according to British United Press. The statue of the canal builder, which has stood since 1891 at the northern entrance to the Suez Canal, crashed into a harbour barge. As it fell, the crowd screamed: “Down with France . . . Down with Britain . . . Down with the imperialists.”
