Flair Picked To Win At Dunedin Today

(From Our Own Reporter)

DUNEDIN, December 25. Relinquish, Flair afnd Writer will dominate the finish of the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap at Wingatui tomorrow if the result of last Saturday’s Dunedin Cup proves of any value. They were first, third and fourth respectively in the Dunedin Cup. The Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap is the first leg of the double, and is run over 11 furlongs . Flair finished over three lengths behind Relinquish in the Dunedin Cup. He will meet Relinquish on 91b better terms on Wednesday, but the Riccarton galloper has not yet reached a position where weight would be an embarrassment. and with 8-1 he will again take beating. The Dunedin Cup was run at such a fast pace that most of the horses from the top part of the handicap were beaten a long way out. A notable exception was Writer. He did not get within challenging range of Relinquish, but there was' much merit in his fourth because he struck trouble and was knocked against the rails near ’ the half-mile. Writer finished with characteristic gameness. He also has an engagement in the James Hazlett Gold Cup on Wednesday, but his chance looks much brighter in the handicap. Canon May Improve The first-day form of the others in this field was nothing to enthuse about, but Canon will advance in favour if the ground is soft or heavy. The state of the going will also have an important bearing on the result of the Flying Handicap, the second leg of the double. The ground was greasy by the time the corresponding race was run on Saturday, and under those conditions none could match Kasr El Nil for ability.

The Invercargill sprinter has gone up 91b and the race is a furlong longer, but it is doubtful if the class is quite as strong. Desert-Cloud and Nairn Bridge, the minor place-getters behind Kasr El Nil on the first day, should do just as well if not better at seven furlongs. Nairn Bridge is racing very consistently under all conditions, and looks as if he will be one of the best place prospects. Light-weight Prospects

A firm track will bring Lochie and Princess Neptune into favour. They are two fast light-weights, running over their best distance, and if the ground is firm they will probably play big roles in the finish. Lochie will be bracketed with Sawdust, a very powerful galloper, though not a consistent campaigner. Shahwan, Ma Reine, and Silver King may be the best milers in the James Hazlett Gold Cup. It will be a notable and not surprising feature of th'e day’s racing if Shahwan and his halfsister, Ma Reine, battle out the finish of a race won twice by their dam, the brilliant Excellency. YAHABEEBE SCRATCHED IN RAILWAY HANDICAP “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, December 25. A conference at Ellerslie yesterday morning between the owner. Mr L. J. Fisher, the trainer, M. E. Ritchie, and a veterinary surgeon. Mr H. C. Kennan, resulted in Yahabeebe being scratched for the Railway Handicap and other engagements at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting. Yahabeebe blew badly after running half a mile in 49 2-ssec, the best of the morning, and she was breathing heavily some minutes later when she had trotted once round on the sand. Yahabeebe’s connexions are of the opinion that she has completely recovered from the internal complaint which interrupted her preparation last week, but they feel that she has missed too much work to be at her peak for the Railway Handicap. Yahabeebe will now be prepared for the Telegraph Handicap and other important events at the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting, which opens at Trentham on January 19. WYNDHAM RACING CLUB ACCEPTANCES ACCEPTANCES for all events to be run on the Club’s Programme on January 1. 1957, close with the undersigned Tomorrow (Thursday), December 27, 1956, at 3 p.m. sharp. A. A. WILSON, Secretary. Phones: Residence 1 Office 73 Wirea: "Wilson,” Wyndham. —Advt.
