SURVIVOR OF HAUHAU FIGHTING

MR NGAHIWI TAMIHANA’S DEATH (New Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE, December 25. One of the last survivors of the Hauhau fighting and of the time when Te Kooti roamed the Poverty Bay hills died on Sunday at Manutuke. He was Ngahiwi Tamihana, aged 98, who once carried messages between groups of the loyal forces opposing Te Kooti. A member of the Ngatimaru tribe, Mr Tamihana was the son of a family which ranged itself against the Hauhau in 1865.
