LYTTELTON NEWS

FIRE IN RUBBISH DUMP A fire in the municipal rubbish dump below the Sumner road was attended by the Lyttelton Fire Brigade on Monday afternoon. The brigade had some difficulty in extinguishing the outbreak, because of the distance to the nearest water main. No damage was done.

Carols by Candlelight The service of carols by candlelight held on the Upham Memorial Clock site on Monday evening was attended by about 250 persons. The setting, on the lawns among the rose beds, was an ideal one. The singing was accompanied by the Lyttelton Marine Band, and Mr A. W. Couch conducted the singing. Satisfaction with the increased attendance over that of last year was expressed bv the Mayor (Mr F. G. Briggs). He thanked the band for organising the service and Mr Couch for his services as conductor. The benediction was pronounced by the Rev. W. E. Moore. Christmas in Port Christmas Eve and Christmas Day passed quietly at Lyttelton. There were five overseas ships and a number of coastal vessels in port. Most of the overseas ships followed the usual custom of having a Christmas tree lashed to the top of the foremast, the trees being decorated at nights with coloured lights. Christmas dinner was served on most of the ships, exceptions being those ships which had paid off their crews or whose home port is Lyttelton.

Many seamen attended a special service at the Seamen's Institute last evening. Pictures were screened and carols, led by the Rev. W. E. Moore, were sung. A short service was conducted by the. Rev. D. K. Boyd. The supper was provided by members of the Ladies’ Guild of the British Sailors’ Society, and a Christmas cake, the gift of the Ashburton Ladies’ Guild, was cut. Each man present received a gift.
