OBITUARY
MR E. H. S. MILLER A journalist well known throughout New Zealand and beyond, Mr E. H. S. (Ted) Miller, has died in London, aged 53. For most of the last 10 years Mr Miller was in Sydney on the editor’s staff of the “Sydney Morning Herald.” Two years ago he went to London, where he continued in journalism. Mr Miller was born in Invercargill and after a brief period with J. G. Ward and Company, he began a careei in journalism with the “Southland Times.”
He transferred to the “Otago Daily Times,” then to the “Sun,” Christchurch. and next to the “Sun,” Auckland.
Soon after that newspaper ceased publication in 1930, Mr Miller became cable sub-editor of the “Dominion.” He later became chief reporter and then news editor. Before the Second World War Mr Miller spent a year with "The Times.” in London, and the "Western Morning News,”’ Plymouth. on an exchange scheme.
Mr Miller’s wife died in 1950 and his main purpose in leaving Sydney for London was to be with his daughter. Rosemary, who had been a promising radio performer while a schoolgirl in Wellington. In Australia she continued radio work and was frequently in demand for the professional stage. A promising career in television has opened for her in England.
Mr Miller had one sister, the late Mrs H. M. W. Atkinson, who was a talented writer of stories for children under the name Mollie Miller Atkinson. MR JACK PIPER Mr Jack Piper, a well-known golfer and bowler, died at his home in Christchurch on Sunday. He was 76. Born at Waimate. Mr Piper was in his earlier years a bootmaker in Colombo street, and later the first postmaster at Riccarton. He then became one of the first taxi ownerdrivers in Christchurch. Mr Piper was a foundation member of the Canterbury Veterans’ Golf Association, a life member of the Avondale Golf Club, the Pioneer Sports Club and the Canterbury Bowling Club where, to the day of his death, he was to be seen daily on the green.
MR R. L. LUXFORD fNetc Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. December 25. Mr Richard Lewis Luxford, younger son of the former ~ (ayor of Auckland, Mr J. H. Luxford, and Mrs Luxford, died in the Green Lane Hospital yesterday. During the Second World War he served with the 27th Battalion, being mentioned in dispatches. He was taken prisoner in 1942. Although seriously affected in health, he completed a course at Massey College on his return New Zealand. He joined the Lands and Survey Department and took a prominent part in land development schemes in the Rotorua district and Northland. He was organising secretary for the first prisoner-of-war reunion, held at Rotorua, when more than 2000 former prisoners gathered in 1953. Mr Luxford, who was 40. is survived by his wife and two young children. MR N. D. BOWMAN Mr N. D. Bowman, manager of the Guardian Assurance Company. Ltd.. in Christchurch for 26 years, died in Christchurch recently. After 44 years service with insurance companies. Mr Bowman retired from his position with the Guardian Assurance Company in October last year. In 1911. he joined the staff of the New Zealand Insurance Company. Ltd. Five years later he left New Zealand with the 13th Reinforcements to serve for more than two years in France with the 2nd Battalion. Canterbury Regiment. He was awarded the D.C.M. In 1921. Mr Bowman was appointed manager of the British Traders’ Company and eight years later he was made manager of the Guardian Assurance Company. He served in the National Reserve and the Home Guard, commanding a signals platoon, in the Second World War. Mr Eowman was underwriters’ representative on the Greymouth, Runanga Hokitika. Westport, and Reefton fire boards for 22 years and was chairman of the Hokitika. Westport and Reefton boards. For 20 years, he was a member of the Fendalton School Committee and he was chairman for 15 years. Mr Bowman played in the Underwriters’ Golf Cup competition for 25 years and won the trophy six times. He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.
