ROWING HEAD-OF-RIVER SERIES
CANTERBURY CLUB’S SUCCESS MOST WINS IN FOURS By winning the seniors, light-weight maidens, and the maidens, Canterbury gained the honours in the Head of the River fours contested by the Christchurch rowing clubs on Saturday. A late sprint by Canterbury was just sufficient to give it a narrow win from a much-improved Union crew in the senior fours. In winning the youths event by a canvas, from Canterbury, Avon surprised by recording the same time as the wining Canterbury crew in the . senior race. Another very close finish was also seen In the light-weight maidens, when Canterbury beat Avon by a canvas. The Union No. 1 novice four put up an excellent performance to win the novice race and showed that they had improved considerably even since the Kerr’s Reach Pennant races a week previously. Largely through the strictness of the president of the Canterbury Rowing Association (Mr W. G. Richards), who was acting as starter, Saturday’s programme was the first regatta for many years to finish on time. Early in the afternoon Mr Richards dispatched heats of the maidens and light-weight races at the scheduled programme times, although all the starters had not taken up their positions. Crewjs were on hand for their races after this.
With only one more day left to complete the series, and this has been tentatively set down for February 9, Avon seems assured of winning the series. Points scored are: Avon 16, Canterbury 6. Union 2. Results :
