Miss I. Tolerton, matron of the Burwood Public Hospital, Christchurch, has been appointed matron-in-chief of the Wellington Public Hospital. She will take up her new duties on April 1. Miss B. P. Cook, who is at present supervising sister in charge of the maternity wards at the Wellington Public Hospital, is to become deputy-matron-in-chief. She will take up her new position soon.—(P.A.) Miss C. E. Robinson, who will retire from the position of senior woman vocational guidance officer on Monday, was entertained at a buffet luncheon yesterday by the staff of the Christchurch . Vocational Guidance Centre. The district vocational guidance officer (Mr G. C. Brookes) praised Miss Robinson’s outstanding service in vocational guidance work, over 22 years. Mr R. H. Hocking, a former member of the staff, presented her with a picture of a South Canterbury landscape from her fellow workers. When Miss Ruth Neligan, a former principal of Marsden School (Wellington), was married to Mr J. R. L. Fry in Carterton recently, a choir of sixthform girls from the school sang at her wedding. Miss Neligan was principal of Marsden School for the last six years and was a pupil there for some time.

The Sydenham Social Security Beneficiaries’ Friendly Club recently held its Christmas party in the Methodist Church Schoolroom, Brougham street. Official guests were. Miss Mabel Howard, M.P., the Mayoress (Mrs R. M. Macfarlane). Mr George Manning, Pastor T. W. Whiting, the Rev. Mr Clark and Mrs Clark and Captain Bridle. The president (Mr R. Hall) welcomed the guests, and Mrs Hall was hostess. An entertainment programme was arranged by Mrs Chatfield’s concert party. An iced Christmas cake, made and given by Mrs Peterson, was cut by the second oldest member, Mrs M. Davis. After the party each member received a Christmas pudding. The Harewood West branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers held a Christmas party recently when Mrs H. Broadhurst presided. Competitions were won by Mrs F. Shipley and Mrs H. Reynolds.

A Christmas party was held by the women’s section of the R.S.A. at the Jellicoe Hall. Mrs H. A. Bishop presided. The hall was decorated with Christmas emblems and the afternoontea tables with red and white flowers. Mrs O’Connor was the accompanist for carols and community singing. Father Christmas, accompanied by two fairies, distributed gifts from a Christmas tree. The result of the third night Howell match held in Crockford’s Club was:— North-south: Mrs R. R. Bell and Miss C. D. Humphreys 1, Mrs M. Wilson and Mr P. Bryne 2, Mrs P. A. Ardagh and Dr. T. K. Williams 3. East-west: Mr E. A. Turland and Mr J. J. Ardagh I, Dr. C. Newman and Mrs R. Godfrey 2, Mrs C. Baxter and Mrs R. Baxter 3. The final for the three nights was:—Mrs R. R. Bell 1, Mr J. J. Ardagh 2, Mrs M. Wilson 3. The North Christchurch Garden Club’s Christmas party was held at the home of Mrs B. O. Moore, Julius terrace, where members were welcomed by the president (Mrs P. R. Quartermain). Christmas carols were sung and competitions were held. Winners of competitions were Mesdames Dailey, Bashford, Hunt, Dulieu, Smith, and Miss Pearce. The premier award was presented to Mrs L. R. Dulieu.

Christmas gifts were distributed to residents of Rannerdale Home recently by the officials of the North Canterbury centre of the Red Cross Society. The gaily wrapped parcels gave a festive air to the lounge and the men expressed their pleasure at being remembered. They were particularly pleased to see Mrs F. E. Burrell, who had visited them at the old home in Papanui for many years.

Members of the Sumner sub-centre of the Red Cross distributed parcels in bright Christmas wrappings to 92 elderly women patients in the geriatric wards at Burwood Hospital. The parcels, which contained toilet articles and woollen comforts, were gratefully received by the women, many of whom have no relatives living in Christchurch The Merivale sub-centre distributed' gifts to men patients also. A Christmas party was held by the garden circle of the women’s section oi the R.S.A. at the Jellicoe Hall recently. Miss A. L. Smith presided, and members were entertained by Mrs Anita Ledsham’s concert party. Items were given by Miss G. Ledsham and Mrs T. Christianson (piano solos and duets), Mesdames L. Greenaway, C. Stewart, and A. Ledsham (songs), and Mrs C. Hunter (recitations). Mrs Christianson was the accompanist. Competitions, judged by Mrs A. G. Lake, resulted as follows:—Floral hats: class A, Mrs H. A. Bishop 1, Mrs C. W. Aker 2, Mrs A. Nesbit 3; class B, Mrs M. Lockwood 1. Mrs M. Gudge 2, Mrs F. C. Woolford 3. Best bloom: class A, Mrs J. Annand 1, Mrs A. E. Cooper 2, Mrs E. A. O’Brien 3: class B, Mrs G. Batchelor 1, Mrs M. Edwards 2. Mrs Odell 3. “Mother” Christmas attended by a fairy arrived at a party held for 40 elderly women at the Sunshine Lodge, Papanui. Carols were sung after gifts had been distributed to everyone present. Items were presented by" Mr Frank Cooper and Mrs Hilda Cooper (sketches). Mr William Hamilton and Mrs Nola Hamilton (vocal solos and duets), Mr N. Havord (banjo), Miss M. Havord (song), Miss J. Havord (dance). Mrs Rona Burrows and Mrs Hilda Reeve (piano duets), and Miss M. Cocker (monologues). Accompanists were Mesdames Hamilton, Cooper and Reeve. Gifts distributed to the elderly guests were presented by the Spreydon League of Mothers.
